Rinsing video at Golden Temple: Ghaziabad man arrested, SGPC lodges formal complaint

AMRITSAR: Ghaziabad resident Subhan Rangrez — the man seen in the viral video allegedly rinsing his mouth in sacred Sarovar of Golden Temple on Jan 13 — was arrested and sent to judicial custody following an altercation at his residence involving a group of Nihangs on Saturday. Meanwhile, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has also filed a formal complaint against Subhan.A video uploaded on the social media handle of Akali Jasvinder Singh — titled “Singha nae lita insasf, quom naal jine matha laya hai onu kisi ne nahi chadya” (Singhs have taken justice; whoever has dared to challenge the community has never been spared) — appears to show a Nihang slapping a person believed to be Subhan, though this could not be independently verified. In another video, a person claims that a formal complaint was lodged at the Ankur Vihar police station in Ghaziabad.

When contacted, assistant commissioner of police (ACP, Ankur Vihar) Gyan Prakash Rai said a group of people went to Subhan’s residence, leading to an altercation. The police intervened, arrested Subhan, filed a challan, and sent him to judicial custody.‘Friends only recorded video, did not pay obesiance’Rajinder Singh Ruby, manager of the Golden Temple, who lodged the formal complaint against Subhan under Section 298 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at Division E police station, alleged that Subhan visited the temple with a group of five people. According to him, one person recorded the video of Subhan while performing ‘wudu’ in the holy Sarovar, while three others stood nearby. Ruby added that the group remained at the Golden Temple for about 20 minutes without offering obeisance, suggesting that their sole intention was to record the video during the ritual.The Viral VideoNotably, on Jan 13, Subhan, in a viral video, was seen rinsing his mouth in sacred Sarovar at Golden Temple, an act of violation of maryada (Sikh code of religious conduct). Following the backlash, Subhan — who posted a reel identifying himself as “Muslim Sher” — issued an apology, stating that he was unaware of the Golden Temple maryada and no one present there informed him about it. His apology was also rejected by some Sikh groups, stating in a video that Subhan kept his hands in his pockets, which was also “disrespectful and not in accordance with maryada”, following which Subhan apologised again with folded hands.However, some Sikh organisations sought the registration of a complaint against him in his hometown and “teach him a lesson”.
