Eye on podium finish: Narela may get multi-sports complex in three years

New Delhi: Delhi Development Authority (DDA) will soon begin work on developing a world-class multi-sports complex in Narela. The process of finalising an agency for its development is expected to be completed this week. The project may be completed in three years, sources said.Apart from a multi-sports stadium with extensive indoor and outdoor facilities, the project will also include a hospital and a hotel. The hospital will also be accessible to local residents too. The stadium will feature Olympic-standard stadiums and arenas capable of hosting international events.

Highlighting its connectivity, a DDA official said athletes would be able to reach the venue easily from the airport due to smooth access via UER-II, avoiding traffic congestion. Even the metro route in the area has been realigned, with two stations falling in the sports city.Six months back, lieutenant governor VK Saxena had conceptualised the project in Narela. It was approved last month and the tendering process was fast-tracked. The official added that the city lacked comprehensive sporting infrastructure replete with ancillary facilities. “Besides athletes participating in tournaments and events, residents of nearby neighbourhoods will also benefit from the proposed sports complex.” The indoor facilities will include a reception area, gymnasium, audio-visual room, administration office, multipurpose hall, three indoor badminton courts and an aerobics exercise room on the ground floor. The first floor will house another multipurpose hall, two squash courts, wrestling area, boxing hall, table tennis hall, an open food court, terraces, and toilets and changing rooms. Outdoor facilities will comprise a cricket field with practice nets, jogging track, football field, three tennis courts, basketball and volleyball courts, two wrestling courts, three pickleball courts, a kabaddi court, children’s play area, swimming pool and toilet blocks. A dedicated internal transportation network will be developed within the sports city to facilitate smooth movement of athletes and visitors. Landscaping, parks, parking facilities, food courts and eateries will also be part of the project to enhance its overall appeal.
