Kanpur: The Kanpur police busted a betting-hawala ring on Friday, nabbing five suspects in Collectorganj and seizing a huge stash of cash and Nepali currency. The gang had inter-state links and ran illegal investments disguised as share trading.According to ADCP (Operations) Sumit Sudhakar Ramteke, the accused sent hawala money from one city to another through buses and trains.Police said the accused ran a hawala operation and lured people into investing through cricket betting apps, with illegal share-market apps found on their phones.Police commissioner Raghubir Lal said Devendra Gupta’s second-floor office in Collectorganj ran a betting and hawala racket under a trading front. A raid netted cash and silver, and Bansraj, Shivam Tripathi, Rahul Jain, Sachin Gupta and Ramakant were arrested and are being interrogated.Ramteke revealed a bookie from Agra is linked to the case and police will soon reach him. They’d been getting tips about hawala transactions in that house for days and acted on the intel.
