Varanasi: In a shocking and desperate move, a 24-year-old man from Jaunpur cut off a part of his left foot to claim disability benefits for NEET medical admission.Police said Suraj Bhaskar, 24, from Khalilpur (Line Bazar area), severed his own left foot. He’d completed D-Pharma and was prepping for NEET, hoping to use a disability quota for MBBS admission. The act was uncovered through his diary and his girlfriend’s statement. Initially, an attempt-to-murder FIR was filed against unknown persons, but now a case will be lodged against Suraj for misleading investigators, with legal action to follow.According to CO City Goldie Gupta, on Jan 18, they received a report that Suraj was assaulted at midnight and, when he woke up, his left foot was severed, leaving only the heel. Based on his statement, the police filed an FIR against two unknown persons and began investigating. During questioning, Suraj repeatedly changed his story and tried to mislead officers.Police checked Suraj’s call records and found he has a girlfriend. Police said Suraj kept a diary in which he jotted down goals before any task. He wrote about aiming for MBBS admission in 2026 and even filled out a marriage registration form, keeping it with him.His girlfriend’s questioning revealed that he was desperate to get into MBBS by 2026. In Oct, he visited BHU to obtain disability paperwork but failed. Frustrated, he decided to become disabled himself and cleanly cut off his foot, apparently using a machine — no sign of a weapon attack.Gupta said police also examined CDR, BTS, and tower dump data. The electronic evidence showed Suraj wasn’t assaulted and no one approached him that night. Medical opinions and his statements raised further doubts. He said police searched the under-construction house and its surroundings, but couldn’t find the severed foot. Some injections were discovered in the field, possibly anaesthetic. Suraj, who holds a D-Pharma, knows how to administer injections, so it’s likely he first injected anaesthesia to numb the pain before cutting his foot. The investigation revealed Suraj called his family around 5 am, but they didn’t answer. He then rang a relative’s phone, and that’s how the family learned about the incident.Gupta said the police rushed Suraj to the district hospital, then to the trauma centre for better care. After treatment, his family shifted him to a private hospital in Jaunpur, where he had surgery. He’s now stable and still under treatment. Once discharged, his statement will be recorded.
