Kanpur: Cyber fraudsters duped a retired Air Force official of Rs8 lakh in Kanpur after threatening him on a WhatsApp call to implicate him in terrorism and money laundering.Based on a complaint lodged by the victim with cyber cell, an FIR was registered at Chakeri police station.According to police, Ramashankar Sharma, a retired Air Force personnel and a resident of Vishwakarma Nagar in Sanigawan, lives with his wife Premshree. On Nov 27, he received a WhatsApp call from an unknown number. The caller introduced himself as a police officer from Lucknow and alleged that Sharma was involved in helping terrorists and carrying out money laundering.The caller threatened him that he would be sent to jail unless he paid Rs8 lakh. Under pressure and fear, Sharma transferred the amount through RTGS. He realised about the fraud when no official notice or follow-up action came even after the payment.Station in-charge Ajay Prakash Mishra said an FIR was registered under relevant sections of the IT Act on Tuesday. “The accused are being traced with the help of the cyber cell. Further investigation was underway,” he said.
