Broadway bus terminus closes for construction on Jan 24

Chennai: The Broadway bus terminus will be closed from Jan 24 onwards to make room for the construction of a multimodal facility complex (MMFC), including a modern bus terminus, and the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) will divert all bus services to temporary termini at Royapuram and Island Grounds.MTC said buses will neither originate nor terminate at Broadway during the construction period. Chennai Metro Rail officials earlier said the new bus terminal, comprising two basements, is expected to be completed within 24 months. The MMFC, which will have eight floors with a built-up area of 11.65lakh sqft, is likely to be ready by 2028. A large number of routes operating via Anna Salai and EVR Periyar Salai will be shifted to the Royapuram temporary bus terminus. Buses heading towards Royapuram will drop passengers at Nurse Quarters and the high court bus stop on North Fort Road before proceeding via Rajaji Salai. Buses originating from Royapuram will halt at Parry’s Corner signal and the high court bus stop to pick up passengers before continuing on their regular routes.Several routes operating via Kamarajar Salai, Beach Station, Mannadi, EVR Salai and Vepery will be operated from the Island Grounds temporary bus terminus. Beach Station-bound buses will reach the terminus via the Muthusamy flyover after halting at Parry’s Corner and the high court bus stop. Mannadi-bound buses will proceed via the right side of Esplanade Road and the flyover. EVR Salai and Vepery-bound buses will drop passengers at Nurse Quarters and reach the terminus via the flyover, while Kamarajar Salai-bound buses will turn left at Parry’s Corner and proceed via NSC Bose Road and Esplanade Road.
