IIT-Kanpur shocker: PhD scholar jumps from 6th floor, dies; reportedly suffering from anxiety | Kanpur News

KANPUR: A 25-year-old research scholar at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, committed suicide by jumping from the sixth floor of a multi-storey building on the campus on Tuesday.According to reports, around 1.30 pm, Ramswaroop Ishram jumped off the sixth floor and was immediately rushed to a private hospital in a critical condition, where he died during treatment.Ishram, a resident of Giriwarsar in Churu, Rajasthan, was pursuing a PhD in the department of earth sciences.Ishram lived with his wife Manju and their two-year-old daughter in the New SBRA building on the IIT campus. He had been reportedly suffering from an anxiety disorder for a long time According to his wife, he was under stress due to illness. Police took the body into custody and sent it for a post-mortem. ACP Kalyanpur Ashutosh Kumar said: “Ishram was in depression due to illness and was undergoing treatment. No suicide note was found. The body was sent for a post-mortem.” In a statement, IIT-K authorities said, “With profound grief, IIT-Kanpur mourns the tragic and untimely demise of Ramswaroop Ishram, a PhD scholar in the department of earth sciences. Ishram was a promising research scholar who joined the institute in July 2023. At this hour of grief, the institute condoles the untimely demise of a promising researcher and prays for strength to the bereaved family.”This was not the first case of student suicide at IIT-K. On Dec 29, 2025, Jay Singh Meena, a BTech final-year student, also died in the campus hostel. Meena, who took admission in the biological sciences and bioengineering department for BTech in 2020, committed suicide by hanging himself.
