Now, AI to identify stray cattle in Ahmedabad, track owners

Gandhinagar: The state govt is launching a pilot project in Ahmedabad that links CCTV footage of stray cattle to an artificial intelligence (AI) model to identify them and trace their owners in real time. The AI Centre of Excellence has commissioned an agency to develop the model. An official statement said that, at present, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) uses a CCTV camera network to capture images of cows and then identify them using microchips and RFID tags. “The AI Centre of Excellence located in Gandhinagar’s GIFT City has tasked an agency with developing an AI model. The agency presented some suggestions for resolving this issue through a deep learning model. This model integrates images captured by CCTV cameras with the AI model to identify cows and their owners in real time,” the statement said.A computer-vision deep-learning model will scan a cow’s face, relying primarily on the unique pattern of its nose. It will also record distinctive marks or scars around the eyes and face, then match the animal to a database to identify the owner, the statement said. Around 1.10 lakh cows in Ahmedabad have RFID tags and microchips, and their database is maintained by the AMC. Cameras at 130 city junctions are capturing photos of stray cows as part of a govt plan to curb cow-related accidents, improve public safety, and build a data-driven monitoring system, according to the statement.
