Gurgaon: A factory worker was crushed to death by a speeding water tanker near Sunday Market in Sanjay Colony late on Sunday night, triggering protests by residents over frequent accidents and traffic congestion in the area. Police said the tanker driver fled the spot after the incident, taking advantage of the crowd that gathered soon after the accident. The deceased was identified as Pradeep (40), a native of Bulandshahr in Uttar Pradesh, who had been living in Jawahar Colony for several years. He worked at a factory in Sanjay Colony and was returning home after finishing his duty at around 9 pm on Sunday. According to police, the accident occurred when Pradeep reached the crowded Sunday Market area. “A water tanker coming from behind at high speed allegedly ran him over, leaving him grievously injured. Locals present at the spot rushed to help and attempted to take him to a nearby hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries before he could receive medical treatment,” an officer said. Soon after the incident, residents gathered at the site and raised slogans, expressing anger over what they described as frequent accidents near the Sunday Market. Locals alleged that heavy vehicles routinely ply through the congested stretch at high speed despite poor visibility and heavy pedestrian movement.Police said a case has been registered against the tanker driver in a complaint filed by the victim’s family. “The driver fled the scene immediately after the accident. We have registered a case and launched a search operation,” the officer said. Teams are scanning CCTV footage installed in and around the market area to identify the tanker and trace the absconding driver. Further investigation is underway, police said.
