Jhansi: Around 21 monkeys were found dead under mysterious circumstances in Chitrakoot district on Sunday morning, triggering concern and allegations of foul play. Three monkeys were also found injured and gasping. While police and forest department officials claimed the deaths were likely caused by electrocution, local residents alleged that the incident was a deliberate act by anti-social elements. The incident came to light on Shivrampur Road under Sitapur police outpost of Kotwali Karvi area, when early-morning passers-by noticed several monkey bodies lying along the roadside. They observed that the bodies were soaked in water and bleeding from the mouth. On receiving information, police and forest officials reached the spot. Following a preliminary inspection, forest department teams collected 21 carcasses and rescued three injured monkeys. The injured animals were shifted to a veterinary hospital for treatment, while the dead monkeys were sent for post-mortem examination. Circle Officer (City) Arvind Verma said the initial assessment by forest officials suggested electrocution as the possible cause of death, but the exact reason would be confirmed only after post-mortem reports. However, locals and activists questioned the electrocution theory, claiming there were no high-tension power lines in the area and no nearby water source that could explain the drenched bodies. They demanded a thorough investigation into what they described as unnatural and suspicious deaths.
