Agartala: A 16-year-old tribal girl from South Tripura, who aspires to become a police officer, has stopped her own marriage after seeking institutional intervention in the Siddhinagar area in Belonia. The girl is a Class X student. Unable to convince her parents to cancel the marriage, she approached the Balika Manch active in her school. The Balika Manch representative then contacted Childline, which intervened and stopped the wedding. The girl was produced before the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) on Friday as part of standard procedure. She told the CWC that on Jan 11, a prospective groom, accompanied by her brother-in-law, visited her home to finalise the alliance. She said her parents initially hesitated but later agreed under pressure from relatives. As preparations advanced, she sought outside help, saying she wanted to continue her education. Her parents initially denied involvement but later admitted they had planned the marriage and acknowledged their mistake. They have since said they will support her education, citing financial hardship.CWC chairman Rupak Majumdar said the committee would extend full support to the girl and her family.
