Kanpur: A speeding onion-laden truck, travelling from Jhansi towards Kanpur, overturned on people standing by the Jhansi-Kanpur National Highway in front of village Jakholi in the Ait police station area of Jalaun Orai on Friday afternoon, killing two women and the truck driver on the spot and seriously injuring a young man and woman.The accident occurred when a tyre of the truck suddenly burst, after which the driver lost control and the vehicle overturned directly onto the people waiting by the highway.
The deceased were identified as Laungshree (45), wife of late Balwan, resident of Usargaon (Kotwali Kalpi), and Maya Devi (65), wife of Anantram of village Jakholi. The truck driver also died on the spot, but his identity could not be established.The injured were Vandana (20), daughter of Laungshree, and Armaan Singh (18), son of Jaiveer Singh. Both were taken to Orai medical college by ambulance with the help of villagers, and Vandana was referred to Jhansi due to her critical condition.Laungshree, sister of Anantram, had come to her maternal home in village Jakholi on Thursday with Vandana on the occasion of Makar Sankranti. On Friday afternoon, Laungshree, Maya Devi, Armaan Singh and Vandana were waiting for a vehicle outside the village on the National Highway to return home when the truck overturned on them.The incident led to chaos at the scene and caused long queues of vehicles on both sides of the National Highway. Police reached the spot after receiving information, took possession of the three bodies and sent them to Orai for postmortem. After about one hour of effort, the traffic jam was cleared and traffic was restored.District magistrate Rajesh Kumar Pandey and SP Durgesh Kumar reached the spot after receiving information about the accident. The officials inspected the accident site, spoke with the families of the deceased and injured, and assured all possible help.
