Bhubaneswar: The Odisha police have chosen coastal security as the theme for their maiden Republic Day tableau, which will grace Mahatma Gandhi Marg during the parade in Bhubaneswar on Jan 26. The tableau will highlight the state police force’s vigilance and preparedness along the state’s 575-km-long shoreline, according to police sources.“The tableau’s design is in its final stage. This is the first time a tableau of Odisha police will take part in the grand Republic Day parade,” DGP Y B Khurania said. According to officials, the tableau will be shaped like a patrol boat, similar to those used by the marine police for coastal surveillance. It will depict scenes of marine police intercepting suspected infiltrators, symbolizing the force’s commitment to safeguarding the maritime border. ADG (coastal security) Arun Bothra recently presented the design to the DGP for approval. “Republic Day parades across India are celebrated for their vibrant tableaux that showcase cultural, social and institutional achievements. Odisha police’s inclusion in the 2026 parade is a recognition of its service and contribution to law and order,” another senior officer said. The choice of coastal security as the theme reflects the state govt’s priority of fortifying its coastline against potential threats, including terror strikes via sea routes. In line with this, the govt recently sanctioned Rs 150 crore to bolster coastal security infrastructure. The funds will support the establishment of an advanced command centre, installation of CCTV cameras at fish landing centres and strengthening of marine police stations. The Republic Day parade in Bhubaneswar is a major attraction, drawing thousands of spectators each year. In 2025, the parade featured 12 themed tableaux and cultural performances of various govt departments, highlighting rural development, women’s empowerment, education and technology. A total of 49 contingents, including Odisha police, border security force, Odisha special armed police and the Central Reserve Police Force, participated in the event.
