Ahmedabad: Over the past few days, at least 5,000 kites were removed from the runway, taxiways, apron, and other critical airside zones—areas of the Ahmedabad airport. Even a single stray kite or thread poses a serious hazard to aircraft during take-off and landing, said airport officials.Teams of some 10–12 trained personnel from the airside operations and BVG divisions were deployed in rotating shifts, continuously patrolling these high-risk areas to spot and clear any kite, string, or debris.Airport officials said the task was particularly demanding this year due to sustained kite flying across the city, increasing the chances of loose kites and manja drifting into the airport’s operational area.Despite this, flight operations remained uninterrupted. The city airport operates about 250–300 flights every day, including take-offs and landings.
