949 fined for flouting lane rules in 19 days in Gurgaon

Gurgaon: Police fined 949 commuters for flouting lane rule violations during a special drive this month.A fine of Rs 8 lakh was imposed on offenders during the 19-day drive that lasted bet Feb 1 and Feb 19.According to police, teams were deployed across key stretches of the city to monitor vehicles not adhering to designated lanes. Officers said wrong-lane driving and abrupt lane changes are among the major causes of road accidents, posing risks to both motorists and pedestrians.Officers focused on ensuring compliance with lane markings, which are designed to streamline traffic flow. As per norms, the leftmost lane is meant for heavy vehicles, the middle lane for light vehicles, and the right lane for overtaking.Police said the objective of the campaign was to make traffic movement in the city more organised and smooth and to enhance road safety. Police challaned 75,280 motorists for improper lane changes last year. In Jan this year, 3,555 violators were challaned for lane-change violations. A traffic official said that in Jan, a total of 1,31,423 challans were issued for various traffic violations across the city.“A fine of Rs 500 is levied for the lane-change violation for the first time, but if it is repeated, the violator has to pay Rs 1,500 each time,” a traffic cop said.In addition to penal action, the department also conducted awareness programmes and workshops for truck union representatives, company drivers, bus and school bus drivers, and auto-rickshaw drivers to sensitise them about the importance of traffic rules. Officials said similar special drives will continue in the coming days to ensure stricter compliance and safer roads across Gurgaon.
