8 youths cut birthday cake with sword on road, booked

Pune: Eight youths allegedly cut a cake with a sword on a road to celebrate the birthday of one of them in the Shevkar Vasti area of Hadapsar on Feb 17.A video clip of the celebration was widely circulated on social media the next day. Some of the youngsters posted it as their status on a messaging application. Subsequently, the police registered a case related to unlawful possession of a weapon and creating fear among residents of the area against the youths. Police constable Amol Gaikwad first noticed the video and alerted senior officers. Officers from the Wanowrie police station visited various locations in Hadapsar and Wanowrie to ascertain the exact spot of the incident. After verification, the police lodged a suo motu complaint against the suspects on Monday evening.The police said the youngsters stayed in a slum pocket and most of them were school dropouts. Their parents are casual workers.
