Dimapur: More than 30 trekkers were evacuated from Dzukou Valley after a wildfire broke out in the southern part of the valley on Monday, according to the Kohima district administration.Rescue operations were launched jointly by the district administration and the Southern Angami Youth Organisation (SAYO). In view of the fire, SAYO has temporarily suspended trekking to the valley, citing serious risks to visitors. The suspension applies to both entry points from Jakbama and Viswema until further notice.
SAYO said it is coordinating with govt agencies and stakeholders to contain the blaze, which continues to rage uncontrollably. The cause of the fire remains unknown.Kohima deputy commissioner B Henok Buchem has constituted a team for reconnaissance and rescue operations to prevent further spread of the fire. The team has been directed to assess the situation on-site and provide regular updates.Buchem assured that all available resources would be mobilised to contain the wildfire and safeguard the valley.
