Kanpur: On first day of the two-day Uttar Pradesh Bar Council elections at Kanpur Nagar, 3,948 advocates out of 11,908 registered voters exercised their franchise on Tuesday. The second and final phase will be on Wednesday. As many as 2,49,918 advocates are registered members of the UP Bar Council and they will elect 25 members. In all, 333 candidates are in the fray, including Yogendra Kumar and Ankaj Mishra, both former members of the Bar. Voting took place at 154 booths set up on ground floor of civil court premises between 10 am and 5 pm. Advocates’ Certificates of Practice (CoP) and registration documents were verified at three designated counters. District Judge Anmol Pal and police commissioner Raghubir Lal reviewed the polling process. Special security force squads were deployed on and around the court complex. Traffic diversions were enforced between police commissioner’s office and Chetna crossing, leading to traffic congestion near Huddard School.Meanwhile, candidates set up tents outside court premises, where supporters raised slogans and distributed pamphlets throughout the day for support from voters.
