Chandigarh: The country’s largest international theatre festival, Bharat Rang Mahotsav (Bharangam), will hold its 25th edition at the Dada Lakhmi Chand State University of Performing and Visual Arts (DLCSUPVA) from Feb 9 to 12.The festival — to be organised by the National School of Drama (NSD), New Delhi, in collaboration with the DLCSUPVA — will showcase acclaimed theatrical performances by Indian and international groups across diverse styles and forms.University vice-chancellor Amit Arya, accompanied by registrar Gunjan Malik Manocha and Bharangam coordinator Prof Suman Vaidya, formally released the poster and publicity material on Wednesday.The VC said the festival will open with ‘Umeed – Manushya Zinda Hai’, to be staged by Delhi’s Pragya Arts Theatre Group. The play is written by Sachchidanand Joshi and directed by Lakshmi Rawat.On Feb 10, Manch Rangmanch, Amritsar, Punjab, will stage ‘Sandal Baar’. Its author is Harjeet Singh and the director is Rahul Maliwal. On Feb 11, the department of fine arts, Central University of Punjab, Bathinda, will showcase ‘Umar Ka Parwana’ — written and directed by Vijaydan Detha and Adish Kumar Verma, respectively.He mentioned that on Feb 12, Apoorva Theatre Group, Sri Lanka, will present author-director Chamika Hathlabaththuwa’s ‘Colombo Hathe Thorana’, adding an international dimension to the festival. The VC said recent developments gave Rohtak and Haryana’s theatre and cultural landscape a special place in India’s cultural circuit. Hosting Bharangam in Rohtak is a meaningful effort for the broader welfare of art forms in India and is a proud moment for the city. The DLCSUPVA is making significant contributions to the state’s art and culture.
