Kanpur: A 22-year-old youth was beaten to death late on Wednesday evening in Hamirpur, with serious injury marks found on his head and body, police said. The incident occurred under the Sumerpur police station area.

The youth’s father accused a neighbouring father-son duo of murder, and police took two men into custody and started interrogation. The deceased was identified as Sumit, a resident of the Banki Road area in Sumerpur town. It was alleged that Sumit went to attend a party with some friends, where he was severely beaten. Two men brought him to the hospital in critical condition, where doctors declared him dead.Father Raj Bahadur Yadav alleged that his neighbour harboured an old grudge against his family and that the neighbouring father-son previously assaulted Sumit.

He said the accused planned to assault his son for many days. According to Raj Bahadur, he spoke to Sumit on the phone around 8pm when Sumit said he would return home soon, but shortly after, he received news of his son’s death.Dr Shashank Gauram of district hospital said serious injuries were found on the deceased’s head and body. At first glance, it appeared he was attacked with a hard object. The exact cause of death could be confirmed only after the postmortem report arrived. After receiving information about the incident, Sumerpur police station personnel reached the spot and started an investigation. Police recovered a blood-stained lever used for removing truck tyres from the crime scene. However, it was not yet clear whether the crime was committed by people present at the party or whether the allegations made by the deceased’s father were correct. Additional superintendent of police Manoj Kumar Gupta said all aspects of the case were being thoroughly investigated, and further legal action would be taken based on the postmortem report and interrogation.
