Silchar: Hailakandi police on Monday arrested a 22-year-old youth for allegedly uploading “obscene” images of gods and goddesses on social media.The posts were deemed offensive and hurtful to the religious sentiments of a particular community.
The arrest followed the circulation of a social media post uploaded on a social media, which drew complaints and prompted police action.According to police, he was arrested in connection with a case filed at the Hailakandi police station under Sections 196(1), 299, 353(2) and 3(5) of the BNS. His mobile phone, allegedly used to upload the content, was seized as part of the investigation.Police officials said the matter is being investigated to ascertain the intent behind the post and whether others were involved in its circulation. “Legal action was initiated to prevent any disturbance to communal harmony. Investigation is in progress,” a police officer said.The arrest comes amid heightened vigilance by law enforcement agencies across the region to curb the misuse of social media platforms to circulate content that could incite tension or hurt religious sentiments.
