New Delhi: A 20-year-old man from Noida was feared drowned while immersing an idol in a canal in east Delhi’s Mayur Vihar on Saturday evening. The canal leads to the Yamuna. A search operation involving multiple agencies in the canal and stretches of the river couldn’t trace Vikas, a resident of Harola, till Sunday night. Vikas was part of a group of around eight to 10 people from Harola who came to the canal for the immersion. Four of them waded into the water. Eyewitnesses informed police that Vikas lost his balance and was swept away by strong currents before he could be rescued. The three others managed to return to the bank safely.UP police alerted Mayur Vihar police station about the incident. Cops rushed to the spot. UP State Disaster Response Force joined in and launched a search-and-rescue operation. National Disaster Response Force, fire brigade and ambulance services also pitched in. Four boats and 14 divers were deployed, Harish, in charge of Delhi boat club, said. Due to poor visibility and lack of adequate lighting, the operation was suspended at 12.30am on Sunday. It resumed at 6.20am, but Vikas remained untraced.
