2 killed as tempo crushed between trailers on Gorakhpur highway

Gorakhpur: Two persons were killed and three others injured when a moving tempo was crushed between two trailers at Jungle Kauria zero point on Gorakhpur–Sonauli highway on Sunday morning.The deceased were identified as 18-year-old Pratima, daughter of one Sanjay Paswan of Nuruddin Chak under Campierganj police station and tempo driver Srikant (35), a resident of Turkwalia under Pipiganj police station. According to police, a morang-laden trailer was stationed at the zero point while another trailer was passing alongside it. At the same time, a high-speed empty trailer coming from Kalesar side rammed head-on into an oncoming tempo. The impact was so severe that the tempo was crushed between the two trailers, trapping its occupants. Police teams from Pipiganj and Chiluatala rushed to the spot and launched a rescue operation using two cranes, a JCB and gas cutters to pull out the mangled vehicle. By the time the victims were extricated, the young woman and the tempo driver had succumbed to their injuries. The injured persons, including the trailer driver, were rushed to hospital, where they are undergoing treatment. Traffic on the highway remained disrupted for several hours due to rescue and clearance operations following the accident.
